Pakistan Emerges as a Key Transshipment Hub Amid Middle East Shipping Disruptions

Middle East tensions have triggered a record surge in transshipment activity at Pakistani ports, positioning the country as an emerging regional logistics hub.

Disruptions in shipping routes across the Gulf have diverted global trade flows toward Pakistan, where Karachi Port handled 8,313 containers in just 24 days, surpassing the entire 2025 annual total of 8,300 containers. This sharp increase highlights the shifting dynamics in regional maritime trade.

Major terminals, including South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT), Hutchison Ports, and Karachi Gateway Terminal, played a key role in handling the surge by facilitating thousands of container movements efficiently.

Experts believe that this shift presents a strategic opportunity for Pakistan to establish itself as a permanent transshipment hub. With improved infrastructure under CPEC and its strategic proximity to the Middle East, Pakistan is increasingly being viewed as a reliable alternative for global shipping routes.

Overall, the current geopolitical situation, while disruptive globally, is creating a window of opportunity for Pakistan to strengthen its position as a stable economic and logistics center in the region.
