Potato: Pakistan’s Growing Agricultural Star

During the year Pakistan’s potato production exceeded the target by 44.7%. During the FY 2024–25, Pakistan produced 9.9 million tons of potatoes against the target of 6.8 million tons, reflecting a significant increase in both cultivated area and per-acre yield.

The cultivated area expanded by 41%, from 268,100 hectares to 378,100 hectares, with Punjab contributing the most to this growth. Punjab’s production rose 45.2% above the target, reaching 9.81 million tons compared to the set goal of 6.76 million tons. The province’s cultivated area increased 14.8% to 373,000 hectares, while the average yield per hectare improved by 3.8%, from 25,341 kg/ha to 26,308 kg/ha.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) also showed notable progress, with cultivated area expanding 33.3% (from 1,800 to 2,400 hectares) and production increasing from 21,100 tons to 27,700 tons.

Balochistan surpassed its production target by 27.3%, achieving 36,800 tons against a goal of 28,900 tons. Although Sindh and KPK fell slightly short of their overall targets, both provinces recorded a minor improvement in per-hectare yield due to better crop management and favorable weather conditions.

Why Pakistan’s Rice Exports Are Falling While India Maintains Its Position

In November, Pakistan exported 406,843 metric tons of rice worth $171 million, showing a month-on-month increase compared to October, when exports stood at 360,474 metric tons. Despite this improvement, Pakistan’s overall rice exports remain significantly below last year’s levels. In comparison with its neighboring country India’s rice exports largely remained stable compared to the previous year. From April to November 2025, India earned approximately $7.3 billion from rice exports, almost unchanged from the same period last year. As the world’s largest rice exporter, India’s export performance has played a key role in shaping global rice stocks, alongside good harvests in other major producing countries that have kept global supply comfortable.
