Wheat Crop Outlook Strengthen for Rabi 2025–26

Since the start of the year, controversy has surrounded Pakistan’s wheat sowing area as farmers failed to achieve breakeven returns in the previous season. Low profitability forced many growers to consider alternative crops; however, limited viable options compelled most farmers to continue sowing wheat despite financial pressure.

Pakistan has now achieved more than 90% of its national wheat sowing target for the Rabi season 2025–26, improving prospects for meeting domestic food requirements. In October 2025, the Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) set a wheat production target of 29.678 million tons from a cultivated area of 9.648 million hectares for the current Rabi season.

Market surveys indicate that Punjab has completed around 90% of wheat sowing against a target of 6.68 million hectares. Farmers have increased the use of urea fertilizer and certified seeds following the government have indicated wheat support price of Rs. 3,500 per maund, along with better availability and relatively lower input prices. These developments have strengthened expectations of higher yields and a potentially bumper wheat crop. However, the Crop Reporting Service (CRS) has not yet released official figures, and the actual sowing position will become clearer once the data is published.

Sindh has sown wheat on approximately 1.41 million hectares against a target of 1.45 million hectares, reflecting near-complete achievement. In Balochistan, wheat sowing remains about 35% below the target of 0.64 million hectares due to low rainfall. Provincial officials remain hopeful that January rains will help farmers cover the remaining area.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, farmers have completed most of the wheat sowing against a target of 0.91 million hectares, despite delays in snowfall-affected regions. Overall, authorities remain confident that Pakistan will achieve its national wheat sowing targets for Rabi 2025–26, supporting food security and ensuring stable wheat supplies in the year ahead.
